Ever since I discovered hygge (pronounced ‘Hoo-Ga’), I have been looking for more and more ways to incorporate it into my life. If you aren’t familiar with this Danish way of living, you should be! It isn’t exactly translatable into english, but is is often described as slowing down, getting cozy, and taking pleasure in the simple things in life.
If you ask my husband, he would tell you that my favourite word is cozy. It’s true. I am obsessed with everything cozy. Living in Canada, I absolutely LOVE the autumn and winter time of year, because there are so many ways to bring cozy into your life! One of my all time favourite things to do is curl up on the couch by the fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate and watch a feel-good movie. Who doesn’t love to do this?!
So I created a list of some of my all-time favourite hygge movies. You may notice that there are quite a few Christmas movies on this list. That is because there is no time of year more Hygge than Christmas!
1. When Harry Met Sally
From the wardrobe to the scenery, this movie is just all around cozy! It makes me want to put on some comfy sweats, make a coffee and curl up under a big warm blanket on a crisp fall day.
2. About Time
Nothing beats a good love story. If you haven’t seen this movie before, grab a cup of tea, cozy up by the fireplace and be ready for some feels.
3. It’s A Wonderful Life
The first Christmas movie on the list goes out to this classic. I think one December I watched this every night (on VHS), in bed with a bowl of popcorn and twinkly lights in the background. It never gets old.
4. You’ve Got Mail
Another Meg Ryan movie OF COURSE! This one has Tom Hanks though, and he is just amazing in every way. No other movie says hello autumn like this one. It even centers around a book store that is basically the epitome of cozy.
5. Sleepless in Seattle
The third and final Meg Ryan movie on this list. AGAIN, with the wonderful Tom Hanks. These two make great movies together. This is another classic cozy up on a cold night, cup of hot chocolate in hand, cuddle with someone kind of movie.
6. The Holiday
One of my absolute favvvvourite Holiday movies. I watch it multiple times every year. And for good reason! Nancy Meyers makes unbelievably feel-good movies, and this is one of her best! There is a cottage-like home in this movie that is basically a visual of what hygge would look like if it were a home. You haven’t had a proper December if this isn’t on your Christmas movie list for the season!
7. Father of the Bride / Father of the Bride II
What I love most about these two movies is that, even though autumn and winter are the most hygge in my opinion, I can still get that feeling in the middle of the summer if I hunker down and watch them. Nancy Meyers for the win!
8. The Family Man
Every Christmas season this is always my moms pick. It is a Christmas favourite in my family. We use to turn the fireplace on, make some snacks, and sit down as a family every year to watch this movie. I have never been a huge Nicolas Cage fan, but I always make the exception for this movie.
9. Breakfast at Tiffany’s
I loveeeee an old movie. There is nothing like it. They simply don’t make movies like this anymore. I turn to a movie like this whenever I want to be taken back to a simpler time. And you can’t watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s without a hot cup of coffee and a croissant, or any delicious pastry for that matter!
10. Harry Potter Series
Okay. So this series is hands down my favourite. My dad and I watch all of the Harry Potter movies every December. Even though I no longer live at home I make the effort. The best part about having a Harry Potter marathon is that you get completely consumed and immersed into the wonderful wizarding world. It is the best winter escape ever.
11. It’s Complicated
It’s hard to pick a favourite Nancy Meyer’s movie. And you may have noticed I included a few of them on this list. She hands down creates the most comforting movies ever. This one may just be my favourite. I have always associated it with a coziness. The kitchen in this movie is my dream kitchen!
12. Love Actually
If you believe in love, you can’t help but be a sucker for this movie. A big part of what hygge is all about is spending time with loved ones. While I do enjoy a good solo movie, this is one to watch with someone you love during the holidays.
13. Home Alone / Home Alone Lost in New York
I don’t think anyone will disagree with me when I say that these two movies are a must watch at Christmas time. Even if you don’t own them, they are always on t.v. because you can’t have Christmas without Home Alone.
14. The Goonies
I wasn’t sure about putting this one on the list at first, but then I thought, I feel good when I watch it and that’s what it’s all about! It may not be the coziest movie, but it’s one I go back to over and over again, especially on a rainy day!
15. The Polar Express
Being a new mom, my son is still too little to watch and enjoy movies, but I cannot WAIT until the day I can cuddle up with him on the couch with a nice cup of hot chocolate, extra marshmallows, and watch this movie.
16. The Notebook
17. A Christmas Story
I’m going to finish this list off with a Christmas movie! A classic Christmas movie. One that I would suggest you watch with your family on a snowy winter day, because it doesn’t get much better than that.
These are just some of my favourite hygge movies. I’m sure I can come up many more. What are some of yours?
