Let’s face it, the last thing on your mind when you are at home with a new baby is taking care of yourself. This is soooo important though! I learned this the hard way. I was so consumed by my son I neglected myself completely. THIS. IS. A. MISTAKE! If you are not happy and healthy you will be of no use to your new baby. Make it a point to take care of yourself. Here are some ways that I found helped me to put a little more self-care into my daily routine.
Extra Lengthy Showers
Getting a second to take a shower as a new mom is a reward in itself. So, when you do get a chance to finally do it it’s easy to rush (especially when you are hearing phantom cries), but do yourself a favour and spend an extra few minutes in the hot water. After all, an extra few minutes as a new mom are hard to come by!
Create a Warm Atmosphere
Who doesn’t feel better when your environment is cozier? There is a good chance you won’t get around to doing much cleaning in the early weeks, months, maybe years! However, if you do a few small things like light some candles and bring in some plants, you will find your mind and body more at peace.
Do What You Love
Bottom line, you cannot just erase everything from your pre-baby life. You will easily start to lose yourself if you do. Continue to make an effort every day to incorporate something you are passionate about. Reading, journaling, watching your favourite show. Even if it is something you can only do for 10 minutes a day, it will keep you sane!
Get Out of Your PJ’s
This sounds simple enough, but most days it is the hardest, and seems like the most pointless thing in the world. Don’t get me wrong, some days pj’s are totally acceptable, especially your first few weeks after the baby is born when half of your wardrobe kinda fits and half doesn’t fit at all. But making the effort once in a while to put on some normal clothes, maybe run a brush through your hair and put on some mascara can make you feel less like a zombie.
Make a Playlist
Music really does something for your soul. Take a few minutes and make a playlist (or ten) to listen to every day to get you in a happy mood! Blast it in your car or dance around in the kitchen. Either way, it will make your day.
Have a Cup of Coffee
Or a glass of wine, or a chocolate bar. Indulge a little. It’s important to stay healthy for yourself and the baby, but balance is key. Don’t deprive yourself. You will have enough deprivation from sleep, you don’t need it from everything else too!
If you’re like me you may laugh at this list and think it’s darn near impossible to worry about self-care when you have a million and one things on your mind with a new baby. BUT TRUST ME. I am the worst when it comes to this and even I managed to incorporate some daily things to make myself feel better. So you can too! And if anyone has any other suggestions please share them!
