It’s a . . . . BOY!!!
My husband and I could not WAIT to find out the gender of our baby. A lot of our family and friends had their own thoughts and opinions on whether or not to find out. Many people encouraged us, because it means you can better plan and prepare (which I am all for), and other people thought we were crazy to find out! Telling us that it is one of the few surprises in life.
To be honest, a part of me wishes I could have held out for the surprise, but I just couldn’t! I could barely even wait until our 18 week scan, so I tried some at home gender prediction tests along with some old wives tales. I tried not to put too much weight into the results, but it was fun to guess while we waited to find out!
Here were my results:
Baking Soda Test
GIRL – So I was a little hesitant to try this one out because it involves using your urine, but let’s face it, pregnancy is just one urine sample after another so what’s one more! To do this test you put baking soda in a cup and add your urine (preferably first morning urine). If it fizzes that means you are having a boy, and if it stays flat that means girl. I had not one bubble! So this was wildly inaccurate for me!
BOY – This is super fun. There are many variations of how this works, but essentially, you attach a ring to a string and hold it over the palm of your hand (or belly according to some people). If the ring swings in a circle it means you are having a girl, and if it swings back and forth it means boy!
GIRL – This changes based on the lunar year. According to the calendar for 2016, based on the month we conceived and my lunar age at conception, we would have been having a girl.
Baby’s Heart Rate
GIRL – They say that if the baby’s heart rate is over 140 bpm that means you are having a girl, and if it is less than 140 bpm you are having a boy. Well, little peanut had a heart rate that was always over 140 bpm at every check up! So this one was also inaccurate for us.
BOY – Apparently craving sweet foods like icecream and fruit signifies that you are having a girl, where as cravings for salty foods means boy. All I wanted for months was french fries, so this one is for sure a boy! Although, to be honest, toward the end of the pregnancy I ate about 17 oranges a day and was obsessed with DQ Blizzards.
BOY – They say if you suffer from morning sickness you are having a girl. Luckily for me, I didn’t get sick once during my pregnancy! Not to say I didn’t have my nauseous mornings here and there, but if I ate a big breakfast and I was good to go! What I lacked in morning sickness I made up for in fatigue and headaches though.
BOY – Speaking of headaches. This was definiely one of my biggest symptoms during my first trimester. They were bad for weeks. Supposedly headaches means you are having a boy!
BOY – So they say if the dad gains weight it means you are having a girl. My husband not only didn’t gain any weight while I was pregnant, he was getting in increasingly better shape as the months went on. So unfair!
BOY/GIRL – This is tricky. Being moody during pregnancy means you are having a girl (according to this gender prediction test) and being happy means you are having a boy. My emotions were all over the place. I was on cloud nine one day and completely miserable and moody the next. This gender prediction doesn’t seem to be too accurate, because I assume most women are both moody and happy throughout their pregnancy!
BOY – I heard one time that if you are having a girl it will show on your skin because the girl sucks out all the beauty from the mother. Ha! That just seems cruel. Fortunately, I have never have problem skin and my pregnancy was no different. Baby boy kept me lookin’ good!
GIRL – I think? Carrying high signifies girl and low is boy. I don’t think I carried very low right until the end when the baby dropped.
BOY/GIRL – I had a few very early dreams where I was having a boy, and then everyone had convinced me I was having a girl and my dreams started reflecting that. BUT if I stick to my original dreams it seemed like it was leaning toward boy.
BOY – Up until we found out we were having a boy, 99% of the people in my life convinced me it was a girl. BUT I HAD A FEELING THEY WERE ALL WRONG! And I was right!
BOY/GIRL – Those who favour the left side are having a boy, and those who prefer to sleep on their right are having a girl. I HATE sleeping in any position other than my belly so this was tough for me. Once I could no longer sleep on my stomach I mostly flip flopped back and forth from left to right miserably.
BOY – A round basketball shaped belly signifies a baby baby boy, and a more wide watermelon-shaped belly is girl. This one seemed to be pretty accurate for me. As my belly grew it maintained a very round shape.
WELL! As much as I don’t recommend putting too much weight into any of these gender prediction tests, they are certainly fun while you wait to find out (if you choose to). And even though some are seemingly more accurate than others, overall for myself they did lean toward a boy!
